Employment uncertainty over the last few years has probably kept employees loyal a little longer than they might have liked. A recent poll by Right Management found that 83% of employees plan to actively seek a new position. 83% in itself should cause human resource teams to really think about what they’re doing to retain their best talent. But, when you look closer over the last four years this number has remained steady averaging 84.25%. At some point, this huge group of employees is going to find what they are looking for elsewhere and take a new opportunity. What are you doing to make sure your top talent isn’t part of this group looking to leave?
You can’t keep everyone, and you probably don’t want to. But I’m sure you can think of a few people who your organization strongly relies on to meet goals. If you can’t, take some time to think about it. Once you know your top talent, think of ways to keep employees engaged in the company and its goals. While money may be the deciding factor for some, many prefer things like a flexible work schedule, the ability to telecommute, and even more responsibilities. Many people want to make a difference and have opportunities to grow and learn. Sometimes the simplest thing can make a huge difference.
It may be a little late, but if you haven’t made a New Year’s Resolution, consider making yours about finding ways to engage and retain your company’s top talent.
Are you looking into anything new for 2014 to increase employee loyalty?
